Our Legacy
Over time, a rich cultural heritage has developed from natural energy sources, as is the case with tidal mills, yet this type of heritage is not always adequately recognised or protected.
The Association for the Conservation of Traditional Architecture (Acat-Tajamar) prepared a report aiming to obtain the European Cultural Heritage Label for Cultural Routes and World Heritage status for tidal mills. This project includes various mills in different parts of Spain, among which are those located in the Santoña, Victoria, and Joyel Marshes Nature Reserve.
Within the Nature Reserve, the project encompasses 25 mills distributed across several municipalities (Arnuero, Noja, Colindres, Santoña, Treto, Rada, Argoños, Escalante, Bareyo, and Limpias), with two of these 25 located in our municipality: The La Grazosa Mill and the Angulo Mill.
This mill, named after the location where it stands—La Grazosa on the island of Viar— is one of the tidal mills where a significant portion of Limpias' industrial activity once took place. It is situated in the middle of the estuary, making it accessible from Limpias only by boat, canoe, or paddleboard. The mill consists of three arches and a lintelled opening, with ashlar stones on the lower part and masonry on the upper part.
Also known as the Magefesa Mill, this mill is located in the Costamar area, adjoining the Limpias estuary. Over time, it has suffered significant deterioration due to the constant pressure exerted by the tides. This mill consists of the mill structure itself and a masonry water containment dike, with construction arches and ashlar stones.
